Eating & drinking

Eating at the canteen (Mensa)

Meals at the canteen in Darmstadt/Dieburg are subsidized for students; partially from the social fees. Anyone else has to pay an additional charge. Therefore, it is important to carry your student ID with you when eating at the canteen. The menu is rich in variety during the run of the semester. You can choose between different main dishes including vegan and vegetarian meals as well as meals with chicken and fish.

Grocery shopping

Groceries and many other items of daily life can be bought at discounters like Aldi, Lidl, Netto, and Penny. A little bit more pricy are supermarkets such as Rewe, Edeka, Tegut, or Real. Generally there is more than one store of a chain within Darmstadt. Supermarkets selling biological products are Alnatura and Terra Verde. You can also buy your groceries at the farm shop (Hofladen) at Hofgut Oberfeld.

Saturday mornings there is a weekly market taking place until approx. 2pm at Schloßplatz (between the castle “Schloss” and the restaurant Ratskeller). Here you can buy fresh fruits, vegetables, sausages, and cheese directly from the food producers.

Restaurants

In case you do not feel like cooking yourself Darmstadt offers a variety of different restaurants, cafés, and bakeries. There is a location for every preference – you will also find your favorite place in Darmstadt - maybe with the help of the tips of our former exchange students!
