With a population of approximately 160,000, Darmstadt is a medium-sized city centrally located in Germany. Since 1997, Darmstadt proudly holds the title “City of Science" and may also be called "Digital City" since 2017. Why?
Darmstadt is home to over 30 scientific institutions: among them three universities, three Fraunhofer Institutes, as well as the Helmholtz center for heavy ion research (GSI), the Center for Research in Security and Privacy (CRISP/ATHENE) and two important european space agencies: EUMETSAT and ESA. Several global companies also have their headquarters here, such as Merck, Evonik Röhm GmbH, Schenck, Telekom and Software AG.
Apart from being a center for research and innovation, Darmstadt is also a very lively and culturally rich city. It has many restaurants and sights as well as cultural and social events to enjoy. Many parks and green spaces offer an array of recreational activities for young and old.

Mathildenhöhe - One of Darmstadt’s most famous tourist attractions, it includes: a park, artists’ colony, wedding tower, Russian chapel and museum. Was once the centre of “Jugendstil” (Art Nouveau)
