DAAD Strategic Partnership

The institution and the city

Hochschule Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences (h_da) is one of the largest and most distinguished universities of applied sciences in Germany with about 16,000 students. A university of applied sciences means that the focus is on putting science into action by helping students gain real world experience through projects, internships and cooperation with local research institutes and companies. h_da offers a variety of disciplines including Engineering, Natural Science and Mathematics, Business, Social Sciences, Computer Science as well as Media, Design and Architecture.

h_da is located in Darmstadt, a medium-sized city with about 150,000 residents, which proudly holds the title ‘City of Science’. It is home to three Fraunhofer Institutes, the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung, the European Space Agency’s Operations Centre as well headquarters for several international companies including Merck, Evonik Röhm GmbH, Schenck and Software AG. Darmstadt is an international city with not only many restaurants, bars and cafes, but also green spaces including a lake, sports fields and a variety of parks and playgrounds. The city is centrally located in Germany and can be easily reached from Frankfurt International Airport. There are also many opportunities for daytrips including Frankfurt, Mainz, Wiesbaden, Heidelberg and Mannheim, just to name a few.

The project

In 2015, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) awarded the Hochschule Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, a grant of €800,000 to use over four years to enhance and strengthen partnerships with five strategic partner institutions. The grant, titled ‘Creating a Trans-Atlantic Applied Science Network in Engineering’, focuses on collaboration not only within the various engineering departments, but also with all departments and on a university-wide level. The project runs until December 2018 and provides funding opportunities for students, faculty, and staff for conference collaboration, study programs, joint research projects and more.
